[Auth_ldap] Auth failures with bad usernames

We're working on deploying auth_ldap on our servers and we ran into  
the issue where a non-existent username results in a 401 with no more  
authentication requests. I found this patch from around 2002 in the  
archives:

and it appears to work, at least for us. I was just wondering why  
this patch or some variation hasn't been folded into the main  
distribution. Has anyone noticed any problems with it?
