[Auth_ldap] auth_ldap seems to hang randomly

I guess the SDK is OpenLDAP 1.2.9.

I have 128 megs of RAM and running 10 httpd processes. Does that sound
reasonable for the default cache settings? Else where do I tune those
     settings?

What SDK do you use?

The cache will use memory. You may want to tune the values of the cache
directives, especially if you're short of memory or typically have a lot
of httpd processes. You might also want to look at auth_ldap 1.5.x and
compiling Apache with the MM extension. This will effectively give you a
single cache instead of 1 per httpd.
